Switzerland

Switzerland is a country with four national languages - French, German, Italian and Romansh.  Influenced by the dominating countries surrounding it, yet somehow standing taller amidst the snow-capped mountains of the Alps, with a highly regarded reputation for political neutrality, personalised banking, quality chocolate, cheese and as premiere watch-makers.

Visitors come to enjoy the spectacular alpine scenery and lifestyle.  Mint conditions for hiking, biking, skiing and tobogganing surrounded by soaring peaks, green valleys and glistening lakes makes Switzerland a sensational summer, winter, infact all year round, high-class travel destination.

Smart sophistication resonates through the whole country from the glittering, world class and internationally famed winter resorts of St Moritz, Verbier and Zermatt to the charming towns of Interlaken, Grindelwald and with a touch of the Mediterranean, Ticino, on the Swiss/Italian border.

Marvel at the mighty magnificence of Switzerland’s iconic peaks, Matterhorn, Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and be dazzled by the sublime lakes (over 1500) Geneva, Constance, Lucerne and Maggiore, to name a few.

Not surprisingly, and in keeping with this flawless landscape, the cities too offer an elevated lifestyle, Zürich and Geneva ranking among the top cities with the highest quality of life in the world.  Geneva sits on the shores of Switzerland’s largest lake, with its landmark giant water fountain attraction, Jet d’Eau, best viewed from Bains des Pâquis, the lakeside city beach where the chic meet.  Another attraction adorning the city is that of the Flower Clock, a symbol dedicated to the city’s watchmakers and not far from this, the Rue du Rhône a fashionable shoppers paradise where you can purchase all the famous watch brands and luxury designer goods.

There are many wonderful festivals to attend: the World Snow Festival held at Grindelwald, the International Balloon Festival at Chateau-d'Oex, White Turf horse racing on the lake at St Moritz and many music festivals from jazz to classical.  Interlaken Music Festival is one of the most important on the Swiss classical music calendar and Lucerne hosts three annual music events attracting leading performers from across the world.

Topping the list for most visited Swiss tourist attraction is the Rhine Falls near Schaffausen, Europe’s largest waterfall.  You can arrive by land or boat and admire the spectacle from viewing platforms suspended over the water.  Lucerne has Chapel Bridge, the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe and on the shores of Lake Geneva, near Montreux, is the architectural treasure of Chateau de Chillon.  In the UNESCO Old Town of Bern, the historical splendour and much photographed clock tower, Zytglogge.  Bern (or Berne) was purportedly named after a bear found in a nearby forest and there is also a Bear Park here to visit.

For the energetic there is every conceivable means of exploring this outstanding landscape readily available, well organised and mapped out.  From paragliding to abseiling, climbing to kayaking, ski runs and hiking trails galore.  If, however, you wish to appreciate the unsurpassed scenery without leaving the comfort of your seat, then there is no better way to see the Swiss Alps than aboard the brightly coloured Bernina Express.  You don’t even need to be a mountaineer to experience the joy of being on ‘Top of Europe’, at Jungfraujoch (col between the Jungfrau and Mönch summits) the train will take you to the highest railway station in Europe and the Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world - what a view, what a feeling!

Lakeside or mountainside, there is only a good side - Switzerland is pure and polished, shiny and white, a special place to visit all sparkly and bright!
