Our thoughts are turning to Spring

1st March, 2016 | Article By Sherwood TIC

We have been lucky so far this winter in the Sherwood Forest area, the weather has been kind and we haven’t seen the snow that last Christmas brought. As a result our gardens are beginning to sprout with spring bulbs and naturally our thoughts turn to new spring plantings. We have a wide variety of garden centres in our area offering new ideas to add colour to your garden so why not pay one or two a visit?

The market town of Southwell is home to four garden centres and you are sure to find just what you need to make your garden stand out this Spring. Crink Lane Nursery (NG25 0QH) is a family run garden centre established in 1995. It stocks a wide selection of trees, plants, shrubs and bulbs as well as garden accessories. If you’re not sure what to plant or just need some inspiration then you can ask for some advice from the experts on hand. www.crinklanenursery.co.uk  01636 812706

Another family run garden centre is Hollybeck (NG25 0RW). They cater for both the professional and amateur gardener and again offer a wide variety of plants, trees, shrubs etc. The staff are happy to provide any advice and share their knowledge. Besides plants you will also find the Topiary Tea Room where you can sit and enjoy a selection of homemade cakes and lite bites all sourced locally. www.hollybeck.co.uk  0115 965 5450

Family run Reg Taylor’s Garden Centre, on the outskirts of Southwell (NG25 0PR), has much more to offer besides its huge selection of plants. It is set in over 25 acres and includes a 9 acre swan sanctuary. Here you can sit and relax and enjoy the landscape. Also in this garden centre you will find a giftware shop, outdoor living, mower shop, houseplants and tea room. A visit here is a day out in itself! www.regtaylors.co.uk  01636 813184

Southwell Garden Centre (NG25 0 TH) is located just minutes from the Minster in the historic town of Southwell. As in the other centres, here you can find everything you will need for your garden as well as expert advice. This family run business is also home to aquatic supplies for that pond you have always wanted, plus homeware, kitchens, crafts, gifts and antiques. There is also a tea room to tempt you with home cooked meals. www.southwellgardencentre.co.uk  01636 812886

Specialising in rare and unusual herbaceous perennials as well as cottage garden and woodland plants is Norwell Nurseries. Situated on the outskirts of Norwell (NG23 6JX) it also offers bulbs, grasses, shade loving plants, hardy Geraniums and Chrysanthemums, and Hemerocallis. These are all grown in the gardens which are open to the public to look around. There are seats in the gardens so bring a picnic and make a day of it.

The Roundhouse Garden Centre is in the grounds of the Thoresby Estate near Ollerton (NG22 9EP). Thoresby Hall is now a Warner’s hotel but the stables have been converted into a craft centre and the garden centre is housed in the 17th century roundhouse. It offers a relaxed and informal atmosphere and you can view locally sourced plants as well as those grown in the Old Walled Kitchen Garden of the house. Expert advice is freely offered so if you aren’t sure just ask. www.whatsonatthoresby.co.uk  01623 822160
