South Africa’s No 1 Holiday Destination

21st July, 2016 | Article By Matt Rowbotham

Voted South Africa’s number one holiday town in 2015, the Mossel Bay area is one place you cannot afford to miss on your next visit to this magnificent country.

Nestled in the middle of the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port-Elizabeth, it provides the perfect stop-over if you are planning to do the whole route over a two-day trip. From surfing to beaches and adventure dives for adrenaline junkies, here’s my round up of the top 5 things to do:

Eating out – Transkaroo Restaurant

Based at the foot of the mountain in Great-Brak River, Transkaroo provides a fine-dining experience of all your favourite South-African dishes. Incredibly well priced and exceptionally well-prepared dishes mean you won’t think twice about coming back for round two.

Where to stay – Ilita Lodge

Just a five minute drive from Transkaroo is the 4* luxury guest house Ilita Lodge. Boasting one of the best views on the Garden Route and of the entire Mossel Bay peninsula, Ilita is the perfect place to take the family to relax and soak up the African sun. Make sure to stay in their luxury B&B accommodation.

What to do – Surfing

Mossel Bay is home to some of the best surfing beaches in South Africa. For beginners, Diaz beach provides the perfect place to learn to surf and stand up. For the more advanced surfers, The Point in Mossel Bay creates perfectly formed sets to ensure you catch every time. Even barrels are a regular occurrence here.

What to do (2) – Cage Diving

Mossel Bay is home to one of the largest concentrations of Great White Sharks in South Africa. There are a number of companies offering day-excursions to see experience these creatures face to face. However surfers mustn’t worry, the beaches are all net-protected to keep the safety of swimmers a top priority.

What to do (3) – Game Drive

Botlierskop Private Game Reserve in Little Brak is home to a number of fabulous game animals and offer day trips as well as some luxury overnight accommodation. For those not wanting to spend too much money, you can take a drive down to their bush lodge coffee shop and pay just R25 for coffee with the chance to see everything from Elephant to Giraffe, Zebra and Rhino.

Mossel Bay is the perfect holiday destination with something to suit everyone. Make sure you make it part of your itinerary.
