Bank Holiday & Half Term Fun Sherwood Forest

Half term is nearly upon us and there are lots of exciting events taking place in the Sherwood Forest area of Nottinghamshire.

If you enjoy a bit of history then head over to Sherwood Forest where you will be able to meet some of the characters who shaped the forest’s past and present, from Romans, Normans and Saxons through to World War I soldiers and of course, the rangers of today in ‘Sherwood through the Ages’. This free interactive living history event is taking place on Sun 29th & Mon 30th May.

On Sunday 5th June you can step back in time to 1914 with Sgt Tobias Ringwood. He will be in Rufford Country Park showing the latest weapons in use and also captured enemy equipment. Find out if army life is for you! www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ruffordcp

On Spring Bank Holiday Monday head to the village of Wellow to celebrate the crowning of the May Queen and see the children dancing around the 17m high Maypole. Wellow is one of only a handful of villages where ribbon dancing still takes place. This family fun day out will be packed full of entertainment with birds of prey, Punch & Judy, live music, vintage vehicles, refreshments and much more.

Do you fancy yourself as the next Robin Hood or Maid Marion? See if you have what it takes in a ‘Have a Go Archery’ session in Sherwood Pines Forest Park near Edwinstowe. Qualified coaches will teach you how to shoot correctly and accurately. £2.50 for 6 arrows. Sessions take place on Sat 4 & Sun 5 June. www.forestry.gov.uk

Sample life outdoors in Clumber Park on Wednesday 1st June, join the rangers in building a den in the woodlands. Did you know that there are over 1500 different invertebrates and 250 species of spider in Sherwood Forest? Have a go at a new craft or activity in the Sherwood Forest Art & Craft Centre, Edwinstowe, on Wednesday 1st June. Children’s entertainer Dave Charles will be in Rufford Country Park on Thursday 2 June. Come and marvel at his box of magic tricks. Or on Sunday 5th June join a Ranger in Sherwood Forest and learn how to identify the different footprints found in the woods.
